A cinematic ecosystem empowering Sweden’s independent theaters
250+ cinemas joined since launch
Challenge
A major cinema chain had captured most moviegoers in Sweden through scale, centralized ticketing, and standardized multiplexes. Independent cinemas operated in isolation, with fragmented discoverability and lower convenience. Biografcentralen built a shared online ticketing system at bio.se to address the functional gap. The challenge was getting independent cinemas across Sweden to join.

Solution
The strategic platform centered on Biodiversitet — positioning cinema diversity (cinema = bio in Swedish) as analogous to ecological biodiversity. Just as ecosystems require variation to remain resilient, film culture depends on plurality in venue, programming, and spatial identity.
The manifesto functioned as a rallying call to operators, reframing independent cinemas as essential cultural infrastructure rather than marginal actors.
Bio.se became both interface and ideology: a digital platform and a movement architecture.
Outcome
Since launch, more than 250 independent cinemas across Sweden have joined Bio.se.
The platform consolidated a fragmented segment into a national coalition, strengthening digital competitiveness while reinforcing the legitimacy of independent venues.
The biodiversity positioning scaled across geography, architectural history, and institutional identity.
Role
Framing the strategic problem and positioning architecture, development of brand platform, identity system, and campaign concept.
