Milko / Bärry Smoothie

Catching smoothie in a bottle

Challenge
At the time of launch, the Swedish beverage market was dominated by juices, soft drinks, and dairy-based drinks. Smoothies existed primarily as freshly blended café products rather than packaged retail items.

For Bärry, introducing Bärry Smoothie required establishing both the product and the category simultaneously. Consumers had limited familiarity with smoothies as a bottled retail offering, creating a communication challenge: the product needed to be explained while also differentiated within the crowded beverage shelf.

The launch therefore required a clear and immediate narrative capable of signaling novelty without adding unnecessary complexity.

Solution
The campaign concept was built around a simple strategic observation: Bärry Smoothie was the first bottled smoothie on the Swedish market.

Rather than relying on elaborate claims or lifestyle messaging, the communication emphasized this category-defining fact. The positioning framed the product not merely as another beverage, but as the introduction of an entirely new format within the Swedish drinks landscape.

The visual identity and packaging were developed to support this clarity:
• Packaging design that foregrounded the smoothie format and fruit content.
• Art direction emphasizing freshness, simplicity, and immediacy.
• Launch communication centered on the straightforward message of being the first bottled smoothie available to Swedish consumers.

By anchoring the campaign in the product’s market-first status, the brand transformed a simple fact into a clear positioning platform.

Outcome
The launch established Bärry Smoothie as an early reference point within the emerging bottled smoothie segment in Sweden.

By foregrounding the novelty of the format, the campaign helped consumers quickly understand the product and its place within the beverage category.

The strategy demonstrated how category creation can sometimes be communicated most effectively through directness rather than complex storytelling.

Role
Concept development, art direction, and packaging design.
